Water Damage Prevention

4/24/2020 (Permalink)

With everyone being stuck in their homes, people are discovering new leaks and drips they didn't know they had.  Today we are going to go over some of the most common causes of water damage that you should be aware of, among many.

Roof - This issue may be worsened with the arrival of storm season.  Here in the Pacific northwest we see our fair share of rain, coupled with the damage your roof can take from wind and falling branches, it's no wonder this is a common cause. Additionally, if your gutters clog, this can cause overflowing water to spill back onto your roof, leaking down through the roof into your walls and ceilings.  Because of this, as well as just wear and tear your roof can take, it is good practice to check your roof for leaks regularly.

Large Appliances - Another common cause are appliances.  This can be a rather large category, as the average household has numerous appliances that use water. Some common appliances that cause leaks and other issues are water heaters, toilets, fridges, laundry machines, and dishwashers.  All of these have the potential to leak in different ways, and are susceptible to different failures, so it can be difficult to spot leaks. However, it pays to be diligent, as it can allow you to catch a leak before it becomes a large issue.

Plumbing - This one is probably the one most people are aware of.  Weather it's a clogged drain, backed up plumbing, or a leaky pipe in the basement, being aware of the possibilities can be slightly time consuming yet worth your while. Additionally, listening for drips and leaks can be another effective tactic to detecting the beginning of water damages.
